This comprehensive programme consists of four in-person, full-day sessions once a month held here on campus, providing an immersive and collaborative learning environment. We'll focus on the essential core skills, knowledge and behaviours that underpin effective management, including:

  • Self-awareness and being a reflective practitioner
  • Effective communication in the workplace
  • Building and motivating teams, fostering culture and psychological safety
  • Managing time and workload
  • Developing others through effective feedback and career conversations
  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • Handling candid conversations
  • Supporting resilience and wellbeing

Complementing this programme are three new separate practical workshops from the HR Ops Team where you’ll take the foundational skills you've learned and apply them directly to critical HR-specific challenges:

  • Improving performance and conduct
  • Managing sickness absence and understanding reasonable adjustments
  • Managing conflict and grievances

These workshops are still in development and the HR Operations team will advertise these when available.

To further support your development, sessions will be complemented by a new online toolkit of resources, offering ongoing guidance and practical tools whenever you need them. This toolkit is currently in development and will be advertised on release.

To complement the programme, we recommend signing up to the Manager and Leader Action Learning Sets offered by People and Organisational Development. These sets are open to all staff, and form part of a wider, supportive network of managers and leaders across the University.
