Professor Martin Smith

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for International Development


Martin Smith undertook a PhD at the University of Essex and has held a number of academic positions at the Universities of Kent, Brunel and Sheffield. He was Head of Department of Politics at the University of Sheffield from 2001-5 and he was director of research in the faculty of social sciences between 2007 and 2012, where he led the creation of the first White Rose Doctoral Training Centre in Social Sciences. He joined the Department of Politics at the University of York in 2012 as Anniversary Professor and was Head of Department from 2014 to 2018.

Martin’s research has focussed on public policy and, in particular, the role of government departments, civil services relations and policy implementation. Recently he has led a n interdisciplinary consortium researching policing and mental health and has worked on obesity policy, devolution and Brexit.

Martin was appointed as PVC International Development in December 2018 with a portfolio focussed on developing our internationalisation strategy. He is working on strengthening existing international partnership in research and teaching and developing new opportunities for global engagement. In addition, he has a strong commitment to the internationalisation of the University through the global recruitment of staff and students, and ensuring that all our students have an internationalised education.
