Dr Joss Ivory

Director of Human Resources



I lead the HR team, based in Heslington Hall, with responsibility for HR Operations, HR Services, strategic HR projects, recruitment, pay, reward and recognition, pensions, employment policies, employee relations, learning and development, and occupational health.

Biography in Brief

I joined the University in September 2017. Prior to that I was Deputy Chief Officer HR for Leeds City Council, and Head of HR for Education Leeds. Prior to joining the public sector, I undertook a range of consultancy and senior HR management roles, primarily in the Finance and IT sectors.

I lives in Leeds, with my two teenage children.

Roles and responsibilities

What is your day job?

I advise senior leaders on HR strategies and issues, developing solutions which are agile and fit for purpose, and ensuring statutory obligations are met. I also look for opportunities to develop the HR team’s knowledge and experience and our contribution to professional services within the institution.

Role on The Board

My role on the University Executive Board is to ensure that all ‘people issues’ are considered at the heart of decision making, and that HR contributes effectively at that strategic level.  To effectively  lead how the HR team can act as an enabler to support the achievement of the institution’s vision and objectives.

Other responsibilities

As well as being a member of the UEB, I am a member of the Operations Group and the Remuneration sub-group.

What makes me tick?

I enjoy making a difference – improving things, whether it’s the way things are done, the way that people interact with their work and colleagues, the ‘psychological contract’ and enabling everyone, irrespective of their background/aspirations, to be their best – in that way, we all make the organisation successful, and benefit from this success.

Outside work I enjoy swimming, squash, walking, and spending time with family and friends. 

My vision for the University

I am very excited to be joining the university at such an interesting time. I am keen to contribute to the vision of the university to be a world leading institution, and deliver our part in HR to help attract and retain the very best academic and professional support talent from across the world.  I am also passionate about the role that a major employer in the city can play in the economic health and wellbeing of a city and its citizens.


Before moving into HR management, I did a PhD at the University of Cambridge, and also had a publication from my undergraduate dissertation. I am also an alumnus from York – I was in Alcuin college (there were only 6 colleges in my day) and an undergraduate in the Psychology department
