Entry requirements and fees

  • A second class honours degree and at least one year’s work experience, or (where no previous degree is held), relevant professional experience in the field of public management
  • An IELTS score of 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in any element), for non native English speakers, or for those whose first degree was not taught in English or,
  • TOEFL. iBT 100
  • Cambridge: Certificate of Proficiency in English A and B, Certificate in Advanced English A.

Candidates will be asked to submit a short personal statement as part of the formal applications process, describing the ways in which they hope the MPA programme will contribute to their professional and personal development.

For those who expect to study the MPA wholly online, or via a combination of online and campus based delivery, the following entry criteria also apply:

  • Access to a personal computer with an Internet connection of at least 56K. Further information on technical requirements can be found by clicking the Technical requirements link
  • A willingness to take part in the programme of weekly a-synchronous module discussions that form a core part of the programme. During term time you will be expected to log on to the learning environment at least three times per week.
  • Sufficient study time - approximately 15 hours per week

Candidates are charged on a yearly basis as they progress through the programme stages. The University of York also offers an instalment payment plan whereby 50% of the fee (for each individual stage of the programme) is paid at the start of the year in question, followed by two further instalments of 25%.
