Human Health & Wellbeing

Health and wellbeing

Environmental research has had a traditional focus on natural ecosystems, and urban ecosystems have been neglected, but recently the world's urban population exceeded the rural one and the sustainable development of so-called "megacities" is a pressing environmental issue with major implications for human health. Severe air pollution episodes are an often unrecognised side-effect of warmer climates, whilst indoor air pollution and noise are other overlooked and potentially critical determinant of health. Increasing social inequality, disorder, and social exclusion impact on urban life. Urban issues are central to our research agenda which focuses on:

  • Effective management of air pollution
  • Environmental impacts on human health
  • Economic valuation of health technologies
  • Equity in health and health care
  • Patterns of social inequality
  • Water and fuel poverty
  • Housing policy and demography
  • Urbanisation and sustainable development of cities
