Biodiversity
is essential for human survival. It provides basic necessities such as food and
fuel, as well as benefits such as medicines and other natural products,
breakdown of waste and crop pollination.
Many of the free services that humanity receives from the natural world,
increasingly referred to as ecosystem services, can only be sustained if there
is a diverse biological community. Conserving biodiversity and associated
ecosystem services in the face of threats like climate change is a key
challenge and requires knowledge at scales ranging from the intracellular to
the global, with our research focussing on the following:
