Student & Staff Sport Clubs

Student

Student sport plays an important part in the life of the University. Please see the links below for further information on the Students Union and York Sport website.

Staff

In addition to the casual sports periods, there are specific times allocated to staff clubs.

Badminton

  • Wednesday 8.00 - 10.00pm
  • Open to all staff and post-graduate students of the University.
  • Membership is just £46 per year and is a real bargain.
  • Free club sessions are held at the Sports Centre every Wednesday evening from 8.00 - 10.00pm and all standards of ability are welcome. There is no need to find someone to play with as a playing order system operates. The atmosphere is friendly and easy going. Tournaments and social events are held throughout the year.
  • If you want to take things a little more seriously, the club is always on the look out for new team members. A ladies, mens and two mixed teams are entered in the York and District Badminton League.
  • For more details contact Treasurer Steve Harlow on email at sjh1@york.ac.uk.

Golf

There is a Staff Golf Society which meets approximately 3 times per year at different golf courses in the area. The normal format involves one and a half rounds of golf with lunch and evening meal in the package price.

2008 Venues

  • 6th June, Thornhurst Manor
  • 4th July, Kirby Moorside
  • 12th September, Presentation night at Allerthorpe

A coach runs to all destinations.

Any person wishing to receive further information should contact Chris Harris (Ext. 2052).

Squash

The staff squash club provides its members with the opportunity of regular competition through its mini-leagues. In addition, there are mens and ladies teams in the York and District Squash League.

There is a club committee which organises different events throughout the year including tournaments and socials.

Cricket

The Staff Cricket Club has completed its twelfth season in the York Vale League and finished a creditable second in the third division gaining promotion into Division Two. There is a regular net session in the Sports Centre during the Easter vacation and outside during the Summer term. The club welcomes any member of staff who wishes to join a friendly club with ambitions to get to the top!
Please contact Jim Brannigan, Chemistry (Ext. 2590).

Angling (University of York Staff/Student Angling Club)

There has been an active club on campus ever since the lake was dug, well actually since the lake was stocked with fish! Despite the dirty appearance of the water, the lake provides ample reward for the patient angler.
For further details of membership and club regulations, please contact Geoff Stimson, Biology (Ext. 8584).
