Derwent Day College Reunion, 7 and 8 November 2009

Welcome to the Derwent College website at the University of York. This site is designed to serve as both an introduction of useful information to new students and as a more general site of interest. If you have any comments please do not hesitate to contact us.

A University is a self-governing community of scholars, and in joining the University and the College, you are entering and contributing to that community. The College system is there to help each member realise their hopes and aspirations about their time at University and to provide opportunities to widen intellectual, social and personal horizons.

At York the college system is essentially an open one, with few compulsions and many opportunities. It provides an easy and friendly basis on which to form a circle of friends and acquaintances within a relatively small community and distinct from the academic departments. For those confused or worried, it provides an accessible system of support on a personal basis. For those liking involvement, it offers additional social and sporting opportunities as well as posts of responsibility on the Junior Common Room Committee and Graduate Common Room Committee. Fundamentally, the College enables groups and individuals to meet and mix in ways different from academic departments, campus-wide clubs or societies, or through competitive sport.

We hope you will settle in quickly and that life at the University will match your hopes and expectations. If you have any problems, however small, don't hesitate to approach one of the Derwent College staff, and we will do our best to help.
