Dr Benjamin Poore of the Department of Theatre, Film and Television has had his first research monograph published through Palgrave. The book, Heritage, Nostalgia and Modern British Theatre: Staging the Victorians, is based on his doctoral research undertaken at Royal Holloway, University of London, but Ben says that working in a department like Theatre, Film and Television has helped him to see the connections between stage and screen treatments of the Victorians: “The book uses references to architecture, fashion, pop music, film, and television serials as well as stage plays in order to build its arguments, and I don’t think I would have continued to develop my research so broadly had it not been for the department’s multi-disciplinary environment.” He adds: “The category of the ‘neo-Victorian’ is one that has been recognised and debated in literature for some time now. With this book, I wanted to prove that British theatre had been consistently re-imagining the Victorians for the last forty years too, in ways that cause us to re-evaluate their legacy, but which also pointedly reflect what has been happening modern in politics and society, from Wilson to Thatcher to Blair.”
