Independent visits

If you cannot attend one of our Open Days but would like to see the University before applying, you should consider making an independent visit and having a look around on your own.

If you are made an offer during the next admissions season or if the department to which you apply wishes to interview you, you will be invited to a departmental visit. Those post-application visits are always of great interest to our applicants: they offer the opportunity to hear about our programmes in more detail and to talk to present students. Tours of the campus and information about accommodation and other facilities are also provided.

Making your visit

If you wish to speak to staff or view specific departmental facilities you must contact the academic department prior to visiting the University.

 Sources of information on campus

Student Recruitment and Admissions is now located in The Stables Building on the Heslington West part of campus, next to Heslington Village, and can be found on the campus map.  During normal office hours we can provide you with further information about many programmes and answer any questions you may have about accommodation, facilities and student life. YUSU's (the University of York Student Union) office is in the Student Centre at James College and can usually provide information about student societies and activities.

Services on campus

During term time, catering is available in most of the colleges (except James, Goodricke and Halifax) and in the Library snack bar. See catering opening times for details of arrangements during vacations.

There are also two pubs which serve food on Main Street in the village of Heslington.

For information on the main campus libraries, including their opening hours, please visit the Library website. The University bookstore, located in Market Square, is open during the week and also on Saturdays during term time.
