Fee status

Your fee status at the University of York determines not only whether you will be asked to pay Home or Overseas fees, but also what access you will have to bursaries and some other forms of student support.

Home students are defined as UK or EU students who are/have been ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area for the past three years.

UK students are eligible for more help with their living costs than EU or Overseas students.

What determines fee status?

Fee status is decided according to nationally established guidelines which take into account your nationality or immigration status and your ordinary residence.

Time spent in the UK/EU for educational purposes is not counted as ordinary residence and some sorts of time spent abroad can be disregarded.

Each university and authority you deal with makes its own decision about your fee status.

Help and advice

The regulations are detailed and there are some exceptions for refugees and frontier workers. If your own circumstances are complex, you should consult the UK Council for International Student Affairs.

After you have done that, if you are still uncertain what your fee status might be at York, you can fill in our Fee status information form 2011 (PDF , 100kb) and send it to us or contact us at ug-admissions@york.ac.uk for advice.
