Student organisations

There are two student organisations; York University Students’ Union (YUSU) and the Graduate Students Association (GSA), which represent students at the University and provide independent advice and guidance. They also offer a wide range of opportunities for you to get involved in: cultural, social, societies, sports, volunteering, fundraising, campaigns, and environmental issues. All students are automatically members of YUSU and all postgraduate students are automatically members of GSA.

Academic representation

Both organisations have representatives on a wide range of University and departmental committees and are therefore well placed to raise your concerns or ideas. They can also provide independent support to students who are experiencing academic problems.

Welfare support

Both organisations have welfare officers and advisers who will listen carefully to difficulties students bring to their attention and either offer advice and guidance or refer on to other services with more specialised knowledge.

YUSU also offers a range of welfare support opportunities so that you can ensure your own safety while you are studying, including:

  • ‘Magic Bus’ - which can take students from campus to their home in York on evenings during term time
  • Free condoms and pregnancy test kits
  • Right to choose fund – financial assistance for childcare and abortions
  • Hardship loans of up to £100
  • Nightline – details can be found in the Health & wellbeing section
  • A dedicated member of staff who specialises in academic issues and can talk you through the options whatever your situation
