The Technician Commitment is a university and research institution initiative, supported by the Science Council and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation's Technicians Make It Happen campaign. The Commitment aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines. The University is a signatory of the Technician Commitment; as signatories, we have submitted to the Science Council a self-assessment document, which looks at the current position of technicians within the University, and an action plan which considers how we can develop this.
The Yorkshire Technician Exchange Partnership (YoTEP) was relaunched in 2026 to coincide with the extension of the partnership to include the University of Sheffield. YoTEP allows technicians from the Universities of York, Leeds and Sheffield to create links that will allow the sharing of best practice, skills and knowledge. YoTEP funding will pay for transport costs for technicians to travel between the sites to exchange knowledge, new equipment, techniques etc.; applications are open to individuals and teams.
