University Teaching Committee

The University Teaching Committee (UTC) is a sub-committee of Senate. Its purpose is to assure the standards of taught programmes of study, and to monitor, and promote the enhancement of, the academic experience of students on those programmes.

Coordinating Group for Supplementary Programmes

Coordinating Group for Supplementary Programmes (CGSP) is a group of University Teaching Committee (UTC). It acts as a forum for the supplementary programme areas, and promotes effective quality assurance practices through sharing of good practice. The group considers the practical needs of the supplementary programme areas, referring matters where necessary to appropriate committee or office, and promotes equality of opportunity across the areas represented.

    • On behalf of University Teaching Committee, to develop, consider, monitor and review policies and procedures relating to the assessment of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students; on behalf of Senate, to approve, report and monitor the results of assessment for University awards, excepting those of higher doctorates, and appoint Internal and External Examiners.

Taught Masters special interest group

This interest group brings together representatives from departments that have significant numbers of one year taught Masters students in order to share good practice, improve the learning experience of these students, and promote their interests and those of the programmes they are enrolled on within University of York structures and procedures.

Learning and Teaching Forum

The Learning and Teaching Forum aims to bring together and support colleagues involved in teaching and learning support across the University.  Its activities include an annual learning and teaching conference, a series of lunchtime workshops throughout the year, and publication of Forum magazine once a term.

Distance Learning Forum

The Forum meets termly and reports annually to UTC. It is open to all staff involved in running/developing distance learning (including e-learning) programmes (or those involving a significant element of distance learning). The Forum enables the exchange of information and discussion of issues of common interest and concern.

Planning Committee

The primary purpose of Planning Committee is to determine strategy and policy in the academic and academic support areas. Planning Committee’s role in programme approval is to reassure itself that there is a market for the programme and that the resource implications of its introduction have been considered.  UTC will not give final approval for the introduction of a programme of study until Planning Committee has expressed itself content on these grounds.  Subject to these constraints and in order to speed the approval process, the application process to the two committees may proceed in parallel.

On behalf of Senate to take final decisions on all cases referred to it under Regulations 5 and 6 and Ordinance 8. This includes regulations on assessment; regulations of general academic regulations and procedures for students on taught programmes; and exemptions from part of a programme of study in the University. The SCC deal with academic misconduct cases, appeals and suspension of studies.
