All full-time undergraduate and graduate students are automatically members of one of the eight colleges of the University and part-time students are welcome to request membership.
Nearly all first year undergraduate students and many international students are resident in University accommodation as are some third and fourth year students.
Students are members of their college throughout their careers at York and freely use its social and welfare facilities.
The college system is overseen by the PVC for Students. Each college is led by a Provost, who is either resident or lives within 20 minutes of campus, and a college welfare team consisting of the Dean and College Tutors, all of whom live on campus along. All are given training in welfare provision. Administrative support is given by the College Administrator. Some colleges have a volunteer Deputy Provost. In addition, Campus Services staff work within zones which include colleges: the Zone Facilities Manager, the portering team and the cleaning staff all have responsibilities within colleges as well as in the wider academic community.
The Junior Common Room Committee (or Graduate Common Room Committee in the case of Wentworth College) elects Welfare Representatives from within the student body. The JCR Welfare reps work alongside the college welfare teams to build a sense of community and to alert the team to potential issues and concerns. The role of the colleges is to support the student throughout their career at York in terms of informal welfare, discipline, and personal development by the creation of self-regulating communities within which all students can feel at home and acquire confidence to make a success of their student experience personally and academically.
For details of college welfare teams and structures, see the colleges' websites.

The Provost can be contacted either directly or through the College Administrator. During any absences, cover for major emergencies is provided by another Provost. Day-to-day cover is offered by the Dean or, in some cases, by the Deputy Provost. College Tutors should also be available.
Provosts are responsible for providing personal support and welfare advice and guidance for college members, both resident and non-resident.
Provosts and welfare teams are available to help personal problems of individuals or groups of students, to offer general advice and support and, if appropriate, point the student in the direction of more professional help.
Students, both resident and non-resident should not be nervous in seeking help and support as appropriate and should consult their college website for further advice.
Academic advice and guidance is usually best sought from the student's academic supervisor in the first instance.
