Supporting students facing equality, diversity and harassment issues

Policies are in place within the University to ensure that everyone is treated fairly.

Student rights

Students are entitled to equal respect regardless of age, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, creed, disability, HIV status, sexual orientation, gender, marital or parental status, political belief or social or economic class, or any other criterion accepted by the University Council.

Equal opportunities

The Equality and Diversity Office ensures that University equality policies are put into practice.

Staff can advise on a range of equality matters, including bullying and harassment, and can put students in touch with other sources of support.

For further support with equality and diversity issues, email equalopportunities@york.ac.uk or telephone 01904 434680.

Harassment advice

The University harassment advisers are a group of volunteers who are there to listen to anyone who feels that they have been harassed or bullied.

Members have undergone basic training in the University Code of Practice on Harassment and Complaint Procedure. They can give informal advice on situations that cause concern. It is a confidential service open to any member of the University, staff or student.
