The University operates its own pension scheme for staff. The scheme aims to provide a worthwhile pension on retirement and substantial protection for your dependents in the event of your death. The University and the recognised trade unions are committed to the scheme as the most reliable way for the great majority of support staff to provide for the future security of themselves and their families.
You may join the fund if you are:
Part-time employees may join the scheme on the same terms as full time staff, provided they receive payment throughout the year. Staff who work 'term-time only', are advised to obtain further details and advice from the Payroll and Pensions Office.
The University of York Pension Fund has two tiers. If you apply to join the University of York Pension Fund, and your application is accepted, you will be entered into the Lower Tier Option for your first three years of membership.
After you have completed three years of membership in the Lower Tier Option, there will be an election window in the subsequent October when you will be able to opt to move from the Lower Tier Option to the Higher Tier Option. If you are a member of the Higher Tier Option, you will be able to opt during the October election window to move from the Higher Tier Option to the Lower Tier Option. The contribution rates for the two tiers are detailed in the table below:
