The experience of working for nine years in the NHS with disadvantaged communities in inner city Liverpool has focussed my interests broadly across health inequalities, with a particular interest in social class, gender, sexuality and mental health. During this time I became interested in, and frustrated by, the inability of health policy to address health inequalities. Part of the problem was that there was/is a limited understanding of why poor health is related to economic, social and cultural factors. The explanation for this relationship has become the motivation for my research. At the moment I am developing projects which explore lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered young people’s mental health.
