Our aim is to ensure our degree programmes are contemporary and at the cutting edge of public debate. Our external rating as one of the top Social Policy and Social Work departments in the country reflects our success in achieving that aim.

Rankings and awards

The 2011 university league tables in The Times, The Guardian, and The Independent have confirmed the University of York's position as a leading centre for Social Policy and Social Work education and research in the country.

In addition, our students have ranked us highly in the National Student Survey and students' union initiatives commending our supervision of students.

Social Work

Ranked 1st for Social Work

York is consistently ranked within the top five in major university subject league tables for social work. We are ranked 1st by The Guardian University Guide 2012, 2nd by The Times Good University Guide 2012 and 3rd by the Complete University Guide 2012.

The BA (Hons) Social Work course at York is recognised by the General Social Care Council (GSCC) as fulfilling the requirements for social work training. The GSCC is the controlling body for social work in England.

Social Policy

Ranked 3rd for Social Policy

Social Policy at York is consistently highly ranked within the top 10 in subject specific league tables*. For 2012 we are ranked 3rd by the Guardian University Guide. We have also been placed 11th by the Complete University Guide 2012 and 12th by The Times Good University Guide 2012.

*Note: Not all other universities listed within the 2012 'Social Policy' league tables in these publications offer Social Policy or Applied Social Science undergraduate degrees.

In the Times Higher Education Rankings, York was 35th in the world for social sciences. A great accomplishment for a relatively small institution.

The University

The Times Higher Education University of the Year Award 2010/11 was presented to the University of York in November 2010. Judges highlighted York's 'academic excellence, social inclusion and impressive track record in scientific discovery.' See the Vice-Chancellor's response.

The University of York is one of the UK’s top research universities and has been ranked 8th overall in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise in 2008. The Department of Social Policy and Social Work has also been very highly rated and is in the top five of large departments in the country. The majority of our staff have been assessed as either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The University of York is also ranked in the top 100 worldwide: The Times Higher Education Supplement Top 100 Universities.

Student perspective

Students who took part in the National Student Survey have ranked Social Policy at York within the Top 10 of Social Policy Departments in the country, based on the recent NSS 2010 results.

The Department of Social Policy and Social Work was awarded by YUSU for consistency in excellent supervision. The award recognised how the Department of Social Policy and Social Work consistently receives high numbers of good quality nominations by students for the Supervisor of the Year award and for the speed and sensitivity with which it deals with Special Cases.
