Showcasing our teaching innovations

At two conferences this May, we will present on: using Facebook in modules, academic skills for professional programmes, feedback through technology, and service user-created content.

The Department will be contributing four presentations to upcoming conferences during May 2012, showcasing our work to understand and improve the student learning experience as part of our wider commitment to excellence in teaching.

2012 Annual Learning and Teaching Conference

University of York, 16 May 2012

Dr Aniela Wenham and Matt Cornock will be delivering a presentation and discussion on the way that Facebook has been used in two of our undergraduate modules, explaining the considerations, preparation, approach and analysis of student feedback on the use of the tool. See full abstract [PDF]

Ellen Roberts, Kevin Hall and Jane Lund, of the Department's Online Masters Programmes in Public Management, are contributing a poster titled 'Flexible study skills support for an international and diverse student community' explaining the embedded approach to skills development and ongoing role of the personal supervisor within our professional distance learning programmes. Dr Christine Skinner and Matt Cornock will be presenting a poster titled 'Feedback and student engagement in long-thin modules' as an exploration of the student experience utilising technology to facilitate group work and provide opportunities for formative feedback. Higher York eLearning Conference 2012

Patricia Walton will be presenting to colleagues from across the York region on the way that our social work service user participation group has contributed to an online portfolio of resources, aimed at providing real-life experiences to students on our qualifying social work programmes.
