Ruth Vassilas

Biography

Ruth joined as a PhD student in October 2022 and is studying the sociology of spirituality and the navigation of spiritual paradigm shifts. Her research explores how spiritually transformative experiences (e.g., near-death or mystical psychedelic experiences) impact people's social decisions and life paths over time.

Ruth is a US-qualified lawyer and previously worked as a corporate lawyer in London. She now teaches in both the sociology department and at UoY's law school, and she is the PhD Representative for York's Drug Science Society. Beyond academia, Ruth is an advanced meditator and a wellness practitioner.
Ruth is currently undertaking a PhD in Sociology but has previously completed:
