Matthew joined SEI in 2002 from the Centre for Water Policy and Development at the University of Leeds, UK.
Prior to this, he worked for Environmental Resources Management Limited and the Overseas Development Administration (now DFID). He was seconded to the SEI Centre in Asia in 2005 and took on the role of Acting Centre Director in 2007 until stepping down in May 2008.
Matthew's research work focuses on natural resources management issues and their relationship to livelihoods. His recent work has concentrated on water resource issues, primarily in Asia. His current research includes exploring water-constraints on the poor in the Mekong; and vulnerabilities linked to extreme events in the tourism sector.
He is also increasingly involved in climate change related research in the Mekong region, and also has a strong interest in the role of business social responsibility in relation to sustainable development.
