Heavy metals and ecosystem

This project aims to assess the benefits of reductions in metal emissions to the atmosphere.

The project will develop and apply new methods for assessing the benefits of measures to reduce metal emissions that take into account the timescale of environmental responses. The development and application of these methods will take place in context of the work plan of the Task Force on Heavy Metals within the UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution.

After an initial scoping study to identify existing methods used to assess the benefits of reductions in heavy metal emissions, a dynamic modelling approach will be established that can be applied for benefit analysis in different parts of Europe. This application will focus on selected locations representative of generic ecological and geo-political regions.

In parallel, an economic framework for the assessment of the benefits of changes in metal concentrations in air, soil and water will also be developed.

Finally, the work will involve a preliminary analysis of the benefits of a limited range of emission control scenarios will be carried out, based on the previously developed dynamic model and economic framework.
