White Rose Grid

The White Rose Grid is a pioneering grid computing initiative set-up by the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds and York.

A grid is a network of computers that operates as a single entity greatly enhancing the available processing power.

This processing power is invaluable when dealing with large volumes of data and has been used by companies including Rolls Royce who have used the Grid to process aircraft data.

  • 24-processor Sun Microsystems servers
  • 256-processor cluster of Intel Pentium 4 chips
  • Sun's "Grid Engine" and "iPlanet" software
