opportunities

The opportunities section of this web site contains details of current vacancies and opportunities for funding within the KITE Project.

Vacancies

Funded research positions and postgraduate studentships in our group are advertised on Earthworks, Jobs.ac.uk and York Web.  Alternatively, check the vacancies section above for current opportunities and contact the Personnel Department for further information.

We welcome enquiries from people interested in developing research related to the numerous KITE research strands.   Whether you'd like to base a PhD or a research fellowship/postdoc here or develop external collaborative research projects with KITE staff, get in touch and we can discuss your ideas. if you're interested in working with us we are happy to help develop projects and to help you seek funding - this does take time, perhaps 1 year from taking an initial idea to securing funding, contact Rob Marchant for more information.

Numerous funding opportunities for overseas graduate and post-docs are available, and some of these are listed below.

senior researchers

The KITE research group offers an exciting and supporting environment to develop research careers.

independent research fellowships
(The Royal Society, NERC, Research Councils UK)

NERC logo The Royal Society logo

The Environment Department at York can host independent research fellows funded by The Royal Society, NERC, and Research Councils UK. We aim to recruit the strongest research fellows, and to integrate them within the KITE research group and more broadly the department, university and International research community over the course of their fellowship.  We can provide assistance at the application stage, offers generous access to lab and office space and develop supervision of funded Early Stage Researchers. Mentoring and career development planning is offered by senior academics, and opportunities for integration onto the permanent staff are available. For further details contact Rob Marchant.

other international postdoctoral fellowships to the UK

The Royal Society logo

The Royal Society's Incoming Fellowships Programme aims to foster science and technology links between the UK and various countries throughout the world, enabling outstanding postdoctoral scientists to conduct cutting-edge research with their UK counterparts. Visits are relatively short (up to 12 months) and can be used to develop longer term collaboration. More details of the scheme and current calls for applications can be found here

EU postdoctoral fellowships

The Marie Curie fellowship scheme funds UK placements for European and non-European Senior Researchers for up to 24 months. The EU framework seven (FP7) funding opportunities are now underway.  Further information and calls for proposals for the new Marie Curie schemes can be found on the relevant pages CORDIS and EUROPA.

International postgraduate students

Numerous schemes fund postgraduate studies in the UK by international students.  A good place to start looking is through the Graduate Schools Office.  Another good source of information is through the findaphd site, which gives pointers of how gain funding, general opportunities for all international students, and specific opportunities for students from Australia, the British Commonwealth countries, the European Union, Pakistan, South Africa and the USA.  Specific information on EU funding schemes available for early stage researchers under FP7 can be found on the initial training sections of the FP7 information on CORDIS.

NSF-START

In 2003 the International START Secretariat and the Pan African START Committee (PACOM), through funding from the United States National Science Foundation/US Climate Change Science Program (NSF/USCCSP), began a program of small research grants to global change scientists in Africa.  There are a number of opportunities available from the NSF-START program to develop research both within and outside of the African continent.  Click here for further details or contact Rob Marchant.

commonwealth scholarship & fellowship plan (CSFP)

CSFP is a genuine partnership between developed and developing countries, involving both home and host country in the selection process. It offers awards in a wide range of countries. It is probably the only international scholarship scheme in the world to be reviewed by an international gathering of Education Ministers on a regular basis. Our awards combine academic excellence with the desire to make a real difference in providing an opportunity to developing countries.  To find out more about the program click here; to discuss an application please contact Rob Marchant.

British Council awards

The British Council funds several schemes including a researcher exchange programme and a research partnership scheme.  These awards are administered by local British Council offices and vary according to the countries involved due to alternative bilateral funding agreements.  The funding section of the British Council website is the first place to look for information,  contact Rob Marchant and your local British Council office to ask more.
