Department of Health

The Department of Health homepage sets out it's current objectives and responsibilities, as well as those of the NHS Executive. This is detailed extensive information toghether with selected statistics. Information is also provided on the roles played by other agencies, notably NHS estates,Medical Devices Agency and the Medicine's Control Agency.

World Health Organisation

The World Health Organisation web site provided a search tool to find infomation by keywords. Topics include :

Once a topic is accessed it can supply recommended reading,extracts from documents and country examples. The information is from WHO publications only however and the summaries can be very short. A Health Economics gopher is also available at WHO which includes complete articles. One of these articles dicusses privatisation in health

Agency For Healthcare Policy and Research

The US governmental organisation the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research has information on research interests and contacts.a list of abstracts of health economic evaluations that can be downloaded together with a large amount of statistical information relating to hospital utilisation, hospital inpatient statistics, HIV and Aids cost utilization and national medical expenditures. The web site also provides detailed information and links to other governmental health care sites.

New Zealand Ministry of Health

The New Zealand Ministry of Health provides information on healthcare and New Zealand based links.

Health Canada

The Health Canada web server provides public health information and various other resources such as a search engine.

National Association of Health Care Authorities and Trusts

The National Association of Health Care Authorities and Trusts site provides information for the NHS authorities...contains references to publications...a lot of links ..and information on how to subscribe to various newsletters and articles published by NAHAT.

NHS Executive South & West - The UK NHS R&D Strategy

The NHS Executive South & West - The UK NHS R&D Strategy contains informationon the aims and objectives of the NHS Executive in the South & West and information on the Culyer report into R&D funding in the NHS and how the Culyer report is to be implemeted. There is information on publications. Commisioned reviews and reports are listed, which can be obtained from public libraries. A newsletter is available online - this in general contains,administrative and logistical matters.There is also access to a newsletter on Evidence based purchasing, although this does not provide a great deal of information per se, it does deal with topics such as small area variations and provide refernces which the user can look up.The Briefing Papers Series commissioned by the R&D directorate offers brief but authorative discussions on the effectiveness of health interventions. There are a series of Development and Evaluation Committee Reports on various procedures and treatements. Thes include economic evaluations of treatments in terms of cost utility analysis and as such may be of use to economists.

The Northern Ireland Health & Personal Social Services provides information on health resources in Northern Ireland.

Public Health Division - Victoria State Government Australia

The Public Health Division - Victoria State Government Australia provides information on in Victoria. The function of the Public Health Program is to protect and enhance the health of Victorians. It aims to prevent illness,injury, disability and premature death by guiding the most efficient and effective allocation of resources between various interventions and strategies. It does this by ensuring the delivery of public health services (health protection, illness prevention and population-based early intervention programs) and by applying public health science to decision making across the health system (epidemiology, health services research, quality of care, etc).

Plenty of information about contacts in the department. It also has a specialised Health Care evaluation unit which includes a detailed account on allocative efficiency.

Overseas Development Agency

The Overseas Development Agency is the aid wing of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The ODA manages Britain's aid to around 150 developing countries, as well as the states of central and eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. ODA's purpose is to improve the quality of life of people in poorer countries by contributing to sustainable development and reducing poverty and suffering. Some information on the structure of the ODA toghether with research interests and publications although information here is limited as yet.
