Máirín Ryan

Chief Pharmacist, National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics, Ireland

I am the chief pharmacist at the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics in Ireland. By training I am a HIV clinical pharmacist; in 2001 I completed a PhD in the pharmacoeconomics and pharmacoepidemiology of HIV drug therapy. I continue to be heavily involved in HIV pharmacoeconomic and pharmacology research with a major focus on the resource limited setting.

I completed the two-year diploma course in 2003. The course provided a comprehensive grounding in all aspects of health economics from the basic economic principles to the practical application of health economics tools and techniques. The distance learning format was well facilitated by comprehensive workbooks, the excellent residential workshops and the interactive web based discussion boards with excellent supervision by course tutors.

This course equips the student with the skills to conduct health economic research as well as the expertise to critically evaluate economic studies. The international approach facilitates translation of skills acquired to any healthcare setting. I have no hesitation in recommending this course to prospective students as a thoroughly enjoyable and highly relevant learning experience.
