Janos Demeter

Managing Director, Trial Masters Ltd

Why I decided to study Health Economics

As the founder and managing director of Trial Masters Ltd, a Hungarian consultancy, I understand how important it is to distinguish my company from the ever increasing number of competitors. I thought that offering some special services besides the traditional CRO activities (such as collecting economic data alongside clinical trials or adapting health economic reasoning to local conditions in order to support drug reimbursement) could become one of our core competencies.

How I learnt about this course

My business partner was just finishing his PhD in London, and, knowing that I wanted to study Health Economics at the top level, he suggested that I should apply to York University. My final decision (to apply) was strongly influenced by the high academic standards and the reputation of the tutors, the affordable tuition fee and the structure and schedule of the courses, which allowed me to study without hindering my work in any way.

What I enjoyed most

Well-structured, comprehensible workbooks, access to a huge library and databases, coupled with clear-cut guidelines on how to select and critically assess literature. The excellent 2-day workshops in the friendly atmosphere of historic York, which provided a welcome opportunity for networking with colleagues on the Programmes and for exploring the possibilities of further cooperation in the future.

Life after York

From an academic perspective, I now have a much better understanding of the big picture, which has proved useful for my work. From a business perspective, I have stayed in touch with several colleagues and even gained a new consultancy contract through one. From a personal perspective, I enjoyed two fabulous years as a student at York, which, together with the degree, has given my self-esteem a considerable boost.
