Liam researches and teaches in the areas of international relations and international political economy at the University of York. His particular focus is on the changing roles of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in the contemporary global economy.
After completing his PhD Thesis at the University of Birmingham in 2010, Liam joined the Department of Politics at York in October of that year. Previously, Liam has spent time as a Visiting Scholar at American University, Washington DC, and as a Research Scholar at the American Political Science Association Centennial Centre, Washington DC.
Liam’s current research explores the dynamics of power within and around the World Bank and IMF, and focuses on the institutions’ low-income country operations. He is particularly interested in exploring the competing understandings that exist within the Bank and Fund about how they should operationalise their respective developmental and balance of payments mandates, and how these understandings change over time.
