This module examines the origin, history and character of the idea of toleration by analyzing and discussing a series of classic texts in which it figures centrally. Among the texts studied are: John Locke’s Epistola de tolerantia (Letter concerning toleration); John Stuart Mill’s On liberty; and John Milton’s Areopagitica. The module explores the development of the idea of toleration in the history of political thought and its relation to wider views of religion, politics and society.
