You are invited to apply for an EPSRC funded PhD research studentship for three and half years, developing a quantitative structure model of size-selected nanoclusters using advanced electron microscopy techniques.
Size selected atomic clusters are novel nano-materials whose physical properties can be tuned from atom-like to bulk-like, often with unexpected results, such as strong chemical activity in gold clusters. Exploration of physics and material science of size selected atomic clusters is challenging because of the near atomic dimension of the physical systems under study. You will be working closely with an interdisciplinary group of physicists and chemists and electron microscopists based in York and University of Birmingham to address the determination of three dimensional structure of these size selected atomic clusters using advanced electron microscopy.
The University of York is a leading research university in UK, situated in a landscaped campus just on the edge of the historical town of York. In Physics Department, we conduct world class research in Condensed Matter Theory, Nanophysics, Nuclear Physics and Plasma Physics and Fusion. The research in nanophysics and electron microscopy has been boosted by the recent establishment of the York JEOL Nanocenter equipped with the state-of-art aberration corrected electron microscope.
You should have a first or upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant physics science subjects (Physics, materials, chemistry or mathematics). A Master degree and a relevant non-academic experience will be an advantage. Strong computing or analytical skills or ability to learn such skill is essential to the success of this project. The studentship is fully supported by an EPSRC project bursary covering the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and the standard maintenance payments for three and half years.
Informal inquiries should be addressed to Prof. Jun YUAN (jy518@york.ac.uk) and interested candidates should go to the online web site for application details.
The position is available immediately. The application will be assessed until the position is filled.
