Visiting the Department

There are a number of Visit Days throughout the Autumn and Spring terms which are specifically aimed at those of you who have applied to study in the department, at which you will have an interview with a member of staff. The day also includes an introductory talk by the admissions tutor, a tour of both the Department and campus including student accommodation, and a mini-lecture on a particular physics topic. A buffet is provided for parents, while students experience a university dining room.

During the interview, you will be asked some general questions about your application, and some technical questions.  An advice sheet is available for you to download - Interview Tips and Advice (PDF , 46kb) - and will be sent to you along with your interview invitation.

Transport to York train station can be arranged if required. These Visit Days offer a good opportunity for you to see the University and the Department, and also to talk to some of our undergraduates and academic staff. The Visit Days are usually held on Thursdays: to find when the department's next open day is, contact us.

The University also runs a number of pre-application Open Days in July and October at a time when you are considering which degree programmes and universities to put on your UCAS form. You can learn more from the University Open Day website.

If you require more information on how to get to the university and indeed to the Department of Physics, you can visit our travel details page, which will provide you with maps and directions.
