Policy: Undergraduate out-of-hours access

Undergraduate out-of-hours access to the Physics Department research wing is possible with a compelling case. The Department has responsibility of 'duty of care'. To ensure the Department fulfils this requirement we request that any application for out-of-hours access is made with a written statement of 1) why this request is necessary, and 2) a statement of how the student will ensure their own safety and the safety of other. This will involve writing a risk assessment that highlights the new and additional hazards out-of-hours access presents, and the controls that minimise these hazards. Your projectsupervisor must agree with and sign the risk assessment. In addition, thestudent must provide two supporting written (e.g. by email) references (e.g.from your supervisor and project supervisor) commenting on competence to work out-of-hours. The Head of Department reserves the right to refuse or remove out-of-hours access privileges at anytime.

The undergraduate in the first instance should contact their project supervisor, then their supervisor. A statement of work and letters of recommendation with a risk asssement should be presented to the Physics Safety Officer.
