Fusion DTN: Careers

There are a wide range of careers that fusion scientists and engineers are qualified for:

  • ITER, both through the present 10-year construction phase and subsequent 20-year operational phase.
  • The design, and hopefully construction and operation, of the inertial fusion concept, HiPER.
  • The UK magnetic fusion programme, particularly for JET and MAST operations, science and technology.
  • AWE Aldermaston in both plasma and nuclear engineering fields, as well as technology.
  • A wide range of industries employ plasmas for surface treatment, etching, etc.
  • Many of the instrumentation and data-collection/handling techniques employed in fusion are transferable to other fields (such as astrophysics, particle physics, etc).
  • Superconducting magnet technology spans fusion and particle physics accelerators (eg at CERN).
  • Materials and nuclear physics span both fusion and fission.
