To study for a PhD you will require a minimum 2(i) honours degree or equivalent in Physics or a related subject. A master’s degree in a relevant area (including MPhys honours first degree) or suitable work experience may reduce the degree class requirement.
For an MSc by Research and a taught MSc in Fusion Energy, the minimum is a 2(ii) honours degree or equivalent in Physics or a related subject.
Applications are assessed on an individual basis, some background in Physics at degree level is essential. To make an enquiry as to your suitability, please email phys-grad@york.ac.uk with your details.
For applicants whose native language is not English, the University sets a minimum English language proficiency level of 6.0 in the IELTS test, 213 in the computer-based TOEFL test (or PBT 550 in the paper-based test), A/B/C grades in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English or grade A in the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English . Students who have a choice between these tests are requested to opt for IELTS. If you have already taken one or other of these tests, please enclose your test score report as part of your application. Otherwise, any offer you are made will be subject to provision of documentary evidence that you have met the required standard in one or other of these tests.
Even students with high language scores can find they need additional language support before and during their degree studies at York. The Centre for English Language Teaching offers a range of classes throughout the year, including pre-sessional intensive English courses for academic purposes in August and September. From October 2012 they offer a nine month Graduate Diploma in Academic Communication (Pre-Masters) specifically tailored for students whose current qualifications in English are slightly below the required level for an unconditional offer of a Postgraduate place in Physics.
Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. If you are hoping for a Research Council funded place, however, you are encouraged to apply in January/February of the year in which you wish to gain admission. Overseas candidates should apply as early as possible before the start of the academic year in which they wish to gain admission. You should also be aware of any deadlines for funding for which you are applying and make sure you also apply for a place to study at York at the appropriate time.
