Research

Overview

My current research centres on developing an understanding of the physics of extreme ultra-violet (EUV) laser interactions with solids. Applications of a recently purchased state-of-the-art EUV laser based on a high current capillary discharge are being developed in the YPI research laboratories. The short wavelength enables sub-micron area ablation and the creation of warm dense plasma in the presence of intense radiation (the laser itself). Theoretical work on understanding atomic processes in the plasmas created by the EUV laser is under way with cross-relevance to plasmas created by free electron lasers.

Teaching

Undergraduate

I teach the third year course on Atomic Physics.

Postgraduate

I am teaching short MSc courses on laser interactions and high energy density physics. These courses form part of our MSc in Fusion Energy.

Other teaching

I have recently completed a textbook now published by Cambridge University Press entitled 'An introduction to the atomic and radiation physics of plasmas'. The book assumes students have taken two years of undergraduate courses and includes material often taught in 3rd and 4th year courses.  For copies please visit the Cambridge University press website.
