Profile

Biography

My PhD is from the University of Toronto, in philosophy of science (2015). After that, I held postdoctoral and research fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh, the LSE, Cambridge, the University of Geneva, the University of Zurich, and the University of Tübingen, and was an Associate Professor at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taipei.

I combine qualitative and quantitative approaches with traditional philosophical methods to investigate scientific reasoning (especially scientific imagination and creativity), scientific tools (especially thought experiments, models, visualizations), and the impact of artificial intelligence on science.

I convene the philosophy of artificial intelligence MA program, and teach UG and PGT courses in philosophy of science.

Departmental roles

  • Social Media Coordinator
  • Department Ethics Representative

University roles

  • Theme lead, Digital Humanities, N8 CIR

Research

Overview

In general, I work on the epistemology and ethics of science. In particular, I focus on scientific imagination, the aesthetics of science, and artificial intelligence. I use traditional philosophical methods, but also employ qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Projects

I am working on a book about scientific imagination and understanding.

In addition, I'm beginning a project on the epistemic and ethical consequences of artificial intelligence in science, including the ways that AI might model, supplement, complement, or replace imagination in science, and the ways that AI might be said to instantiate scientific understanding.

External activities

Overview

I teach philosophy in UK prisons with a charity called Philosophy in Prisons.

Memberships

  • I am a member of PhilSci India, and the Asia-Pacific Philosophy of Science Association.
