Welcome to the home page of the British Society for the History of Philosophy. Founded in 1984 as a registered charity, the Society promotes all aspects of the study and teaching of the history of philosophy through conferences, publications (in particular, the BJHP) and other activities (such as our Graduate Student Essay Prize).

Information on all of this can be accessed from the links on the left, together with details of our aims, management committee and membership (including how to apply).

We have also included a list of other societies, resource groups and resources relating to the history of philosophy.

Please do contact us if you have any questions, comments or ideas for possible events.

The Digital Locke Project

Dr Paul Schuurman is pleased to announce the latest update to the Digital Locke Project, see http://www.digitallockeproject.nl/.

The philosophical texts produced by Locke after the publication of the Essay in 1689 have been transcribed and annotated with text-critical and philosophical notes. An introductory essay, a chronology, a description of the manuscripts, textual remarks including a reconstruction of the genesis of the texts, have all been added or expanded.

The texts include the 'Conduct of the Understanding', the writings against Malebranche and Norris, ethical fragments, drafts for the fourth edition of the Essay, some shorter fragments, and Locke's own marginalia in texts by John Sergeant and Thomas Burnet. This presentation of 36 texts concludes the first phase of the Digital Locke Project. Dr Schuurman looks forward to your remarks and suggestions.

Charles Schmitt Prize 2012

As the result of generous donations from an anonymous donor and our publisher (Routledge), the International Society for Intellectual History is offering, on an annual basis, a prize to honour the contribution of the late Charles Schmitt to intellectual history.

The prize is £250, plus £50 worth of Routledge books, and a year's free membership of the ISIH with a subscription to the Society's quarterly journal Intellectual History Review. The paper awarded the prize will also be published in the Intellectual History Review.

Submissions will be accepted in any area of intellectual history, broadly construed, 1500 to the present, including the historiography of intellectual history. Because it is a condition of the award that the paper awarded the prize will be published by IHR, submissions should not have been accepted for publication elsewhere, or exceed 9000 words. Eligibility is restricted to doctoral students and those who have submitted their PhD within two years of the closing date for the prize.

The paper should be forwarded as an e-mail attachment to stephen.gaukroger@arts.usyd.edu.au and to s.clucas@bbk.ac.uk. The e-mail itself should state that the paper is being entered for the prize, and should confirm eligibility at the time of submission, as well as availability of the paper for publication.

The closing date for the prize is 31 December 2011, and an announcement of the award will be made in early 2012.
