Research

Overview

I have long had an interest in relations between philosophy and literature. One of the guiding ideas informing my work has been the thought that engagement with literature is not just a 'natural' activity, reading and responding to texts, but an activity deeply shaped by cultural conventions. These conventions, broadly specifiable within a 'practice' or 'institution', dictate the kinds of expectations that readers bring to literary works and the values they seek from them which the great literary works reward. The attempt to characterise these conventions in a way that is both non-trivial yet able to accommodate the vast variety of literary genres and styles, has been a major objective. It has led me to examine the relation between literature and truth, the idea of fictionality, the nature of interpretation, the role of emotion in response to fiction, and the distinctive values sought in works of literature.

Research interests

Aesthetics, Philosophy of Literature, Fictionality, Philosophy of Language

Current projects

I am just starting on a bigger project which is the philosophical exploration of poetry, with the aim of characterising what is distinctive about poetry linguistically and as a mode of expression. It will draw on two recent papers of mine: 'The Elusiveness of Poetic Meaning', Ratio, vol. XXII, no. 4 (2009), and 'Poetry and Abstract Thought', Midwest Studies in Philosophy, vol. XXXIII (2009). I am currently preparing a paper for an Oxford University Press volume on the philosophy of poetry edited by John Gibson.
