Welcome to the University of York PGCE course.
Our one-year course is a popular and highly-rated course. It is judged to be a grade ‘1’ course by Ofsted, having been rated ‘outstanding’ for the quality of training provided and for its management and quality assurance. Trainee satisfaction is consistently high, and a PGCE from York is a passport to a successful teaching career.
The course runs in partnership with about 50 schools in the Yorkshire region, and over the years we have developed a joint approach in which school teachers and university tutors share responsibility for training you to be a teacher. We pride ourselves on providing a practical and up-to-date course. You spend two-thirds of your time in schools, and so get a lot of classroom experience. During university-based work, there is a range of lectures, seminars and workshops, with an emphasis on team work and collaboration. All university tutors are experienced classroom practitioners, so you can expect a feet-on-the-ground approach when it comes to teaching you the tools of the trade.
We offer training in five curriculum areas: English, History, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages and Science. The programme is assessed at Masters (M) level. We value diversity, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds and with a wide range of experience.
