The Salters Horners Advanced Physics (SHAP) Teachers' Award
This award is made annually to an outstanding teacher of the Salters Horners Advanced Physics course. It is open to teachers who are using a wholly or predominantly SHAP approach to Edexcel AS/A-level physics specification and is a means of giving public recognition to teachers who are doing outstanding work with SHAP. Those proposed for the award in previous years have also told us how much it meant to them to be put forward by colleagues for consideration for the award, regardless of whether they were short-listed. The award is a prestigious one, raising the profile not only of the recipients but of the schools and colleges in which they work.
As you consider whether to nominate one of your SHAP teacher colleagues, or to submit your own application, you may like to consider the following questions.
- Are your AS/A-level physics staff using a wholly or largely SHAP approach?
- Is physics a lively subject in your school/college?
- Do many students choose to study physics at AS level?
- Do many of those students continue with physics in the A2 year?
- Are there activities for physics students beyond the normal lessons?
- Is there help and encouragement for physics students right across the ability range?
- Are students inspired to continue with physics and related subjects after they leave?
- Is there a teacher who has a particularly positive influence on physics students?
- Are colleagues, parents and visitors impressed by a particular physics teacher?
- Has a member of your physics department supported colleagues in other institutions with advice and information concerning the SHAP course?
If you can answer yes to some of these questions, then please consider proposing one of your physics teachers for the SHAP teachers’ award, or putting yourself forward for consideration.
