This book takes six activities from Science The Salters' Approach and demonstrates how they can be adapted to meet a diverse range of learning needs and raise achievement. The activities may be taught as part of any key stage 4 course and are intended for pupils working within levels 3 - 6 of the National Curriculum.

Account is taken of the fact that pupils' learning needs may be the result of many influences including linguistic, cultural and ethnic diversity, disability and gender or special educational need. In addition, the author recognises the importance of personal interests and experiences and their influence on how an individual learns.

Key features include

  • an overview of diverse learning needs
  • identification of potential barriers to learning in mainstream activities
  • the methodology employed in adapting each activity
  • strategies which are matched to pupil ability and enable independent learning
  • the importance of understanding how literacy and numeracy skills develop
  • teachers notes which support practitioners with either limited experience in either special needs or science teaching.

Some of the exemplary activities have been chosen because they address challenging science concepts or practical organisational difficulties. Each activity includes both the mainstream resource and it's adaptation. Individual tables highlight aspects of the procedures and pupil sheets in the mainstream resource which may create barriers to learning. These barriers are then directly linked to instructions for making the changes which appear in the adapted, photocopiable material. The hope is that once teachers have tried out the activivties successfully, they will adopt the ideas when adapting materiuals of their own.
