UYSEG is based in the Chemistry Department of the
University of York, and is a unique collaboration between the science
departments of the University and the Department of Educational
Studies. Membership of the group includes academic staff of these
departments, teachers on full or part time appointments or secondments,
students studying for higher degrees in science education and visiting
academics from many parts of the world.
Major curriculum developments have included the Salters
projects at GCSE and Advanced GCE level. A new curriculum for scientific
literacy, Twenty-first
Century Science, is under development in collaboration with
the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
In addition to its curriculum development work, UYSEG
is active in the pre- and in-service training of teachers, in science
education research and in the development of school-industry links.
UYSEG is home to the Chemical Industry Education Centre, which is
dedicated to enhancing primary and secondary students' awareness
of the chemical industry.
