Science Sites

This page contains a list of web sites which we hope you will find both useful and interesting.  At the moment they are not in any particular order. If you would like to add to this site then please contact the Plant Protein Club

European Fructan Association
An informational network of persons interested in fructans, with emphasis on inulin

Bio-Organic Chemistry at the University of Utrecht
Some useful links to glycobiology and carbohydrate meetings and databases

Green Chemistry Network
Their main activity is the promotion of green sustainable chemistry in schools, universities and industry.

Microarray resource
Kindly donated by Jay Hinton at the Institute of Food Research - a massive list of web sites of companies, array or slide companies, societies, events, journals, technical help, institutes, organisations and groups.

Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes
KEGG is an extremely powerful assimilation of information on metabolic and regulatory pathways and molecular assemblies.  It organises a database of chemical compounds in living cells in pathway maps containing active links to information on those compounds and the enzymes that use them as substrates.  So, you can enter the database looking for a specific compound, find out about enzymes involved in the synthesis and degradation of that compound, and follow links to genome, protein sequence and protein structure databases.  Or, go in with a gene and find out about the biochemistry that its product performs.  There are also maps describing signalling pathways and molecular assemblies such as transcription and translation complexes.

PubCrawler
PubCrawler is a free "alerting" service that searches the daily updates of the PubMed and GenBank databases using search parameters (keywords, author names, gene names, etc.) specified by the user.  The results are presented as an HTML web page, accessible to you only via a password at the PubCrawler WWW-Service, or you can receive them via e-mail.  Searches are carried out at intervals specified by you, and only records that you haven’t seen before are shown.

The CMS Molecular Biology Resource
Everyone has their favourite compendium of sites for molecular biology, and this is mine.  It’s very well organised and presented and includes links to programs for molecular biology, protein/peptide analysis, molecular evolution, biochemistry and molecular modelling, as well as the usual links to other useful resources.

Buffer design
A useful site for those who use pH buffered solutions in their lab work - which is most of us.  The site provides a form to fill in with the details of your desired buffer (pH, ionic strength, temperature it will be used at, etc.), then you just click a button to get the recipe you need.  There is also a link to a down-loadable book written by the authors on biological buffers.

Köhler's Medicinal Plants
Of interest to people who like botanical art, this site contains images taken from Hermann A. Köhler's work, Medizinal Pflanzen, published in 1887. The remarkable feature of the publication is its finely detailed illustrations by the artists L. Müeller and C.F. Schmidt, reproduced by K. Gunther in chromolithography.

The Arabidopsis Information Resource (TAIR)
Provides genomic and literature data about Arabidopsis thaliana.

Biotechnology Dictionary
An agricultural and environmental biotechnology annotated dictionary.

ExPASy Molecular Biology Server
The ExPASy (Expert Protein Analysis System) proteomics server of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) is dedicated to the analysis of protein sequences and structures as well as 2-D PAGE.

Institute of Biology
