The Sheep Trust was founded from Heritage GeneBank - the organisation that helped to conserve sheep breeds at threat from extinction during the UK Foot and Mouth Disease epidemic of 2001. Geographically concentrated breeds are at particular risk from disease outbreaks in their regions. The outbreak of Blue Tongue Virus again confirmed the huge risks facing our heritage sheep breeds. Now the breeds face a new threat Schmallenberg virus. The virus has already affected farms in northern Europe and there are cases already in the UK.

The Sheep Trust continues to work with European organisations also concerned for their heritage sheep breeds.
