3. Increasing biomass for biofuel production

Discovery of novel genes controlling plant biomass and growth rate under low input conditions
Funded by The Garfield Weston Foundation
Steven Penfield.

The objective of this project is to encourage biomass crops to continue to accumulate biomass even in cold conditions.  The project’s outputs will also have applications for a range of crops including for example forage crops and winter oilseed rape.

A number of transcription factors that influence plant growth at different temperatures have been discovered and patented by CNAP. These now need to be evaluated in various biomass and other crops in order to establish utility.
