The concept of Self processing refers to plants with enzymes built in that modify the cell wall in vivo or post harvest. Partner 3 has pioneered this field and contributes to WorkPackage 5 with Arabidopsis plants modified in rhamnogalacturonan-I, with Brachypodium modified in xylan arabinosylation and with Brachypodium plants that process their xylan post harvest. A more easily disassembled wall is expected. Wall disassembly and the energy it takes depend on how the wall is assembled. In the more fundamental WP3 we contribute with studies of how a group of new glycosyltransferase candidate genes determine wall assembly. A major contribution to WP3 is the production of Brachypodium transformants for several Renewal partners.
