INRA is the French national institute for agronomic research. Three INRA
laboratories in the field of plant cell wall research participate in
this proposal. The Laboratory of Cell Biology (lab1) and the UMR 206
AgroParisTech-INRA team (lab2) in the centre of Versailles-Grignon and
the INRA Laboratory in Nantes (lab3).
The group of Herman Höfte and Lise Jouanin has been working for over 10
years on the genetic analysis of cell walls in/ Arabidopsis/. Major
discoveries are the genetic identification of key components of the
machinery for cellulose and pectin synthesis and the modification of
hemicelluloses, the identification of key genes for lignin synthesis and
regulators of cell elongation. They also developed a FT-IR based
classification system for cell wall mutants, which has been adopted by
several other laboratories.
In the framework of the RENEWALL project, our group contributes to the
screening for novel cell wall and saccharification mutants in
Brachypodium and the cloning of the correspondig genes, the study of the
synthesis of cellulose, synthesis and polymerisation of lignin and the
development of novel strategies to improve saccharification potential of
grasses.
