York Children’s University events success

Posted on 30 November 2015

Over 400 children and parents took part in events organised by the York Children’s University (CU) last week, aimed at fostering a love of learning in children.

‘CU in the City’ events were hosted by local organisations, academics and student volunteers from the University of York.

Families had the opportunity to take part in improvisation masterclasses with York Theatre Royal, discovered amazing animal adaptations with Flamingo Land, and learnt all about York’s bugs with hands-on events.

At the University, students from creative writing project Inkwell delivered storytelling workshops about superheros, the Department of Physics offered an interactive lecture about electricity and the Department of Psychology ran an event on visual illusions.

Harriet Brassington, Inkwell Student Volunteer, said: "At Inkwell we think learning outside the classroom in a fun and informal way builds children's confidence, no matter what their ability level, and working with York Children's University on these events has been the perfect proof of this!"

York Children's University is part of a national scheme led by the CU Trust, run locally by employee-volunteering charity York Cares and the University of York. York CU aims to raise aspirations in children aged 5 - 14 through short, fun, innovative activities.
