  • The University is ranked in the World Top 100 universities.
  • York is a member of the Worldwide Universities Network.
  • The University was founded in 1963 with 200 students.
  • The University now has some 15,000 students and more than 30 academic departments and research centres.
  • The 2008 Research and Assessment Exercise saw the University ranked 8th in the UK for research.
  • Professor Brian Cantor is the University's fifth Vice-Chancellor having taken up his appointment in October 2002.
  • Greg Dyke has been Chancellor of the University since August 2004.
  • The University employs around 3,500 people directly. A further 4,500 jobs are due to be created in the coming years.
  • The most recent assessment of the University's economic impact on the local community found us to be contributing 5,700 jobs and £182m of income.
  • The University is in the process of extending its campus at Heslington East. The first phase of the £750m development opened in October 2010 and the second phase is under construction with its first building, Langwith College, due to be opened in September 2012.
